The Canada Health Act
November 22nd, 2010 by PolicyMatters | 1 CommentThe Canada Health Act sets out the conditions for federal funding to support provincial and territorial health insurance plans with the goal of ensuring that every eligible resident of Canada has reasonable access to insured health service, regardless of where in the country they live.
However, for historical reasons, the Canada Health Act’s core principles of universal, publicly funded health insurance primarily apply to only medically necessary hospital and physician services (as well as some in-hospital dental) and, even then, there is no clear definition of what specifically should be funded.
As a consequence, people across the country find themselves with unequal access to insured health services, in spite of the Canada Health Act’s vision for a comprehensive, universal, and publicly funded health care system.
Hello, I wanted to share my experience with you surrounding benefits for my family. I am a full time RN at the JCC in Hamilton Ontario and have been for 30 years. I am a single mom putting two young adults through college. Unfortunetly because of the USSteel lock out we have lost our benefit coverage(I was still covered by my previous spouse). So having lost the benefits i call my employeer and ask to pick up my own benefits. I am told to get a letter that states the actual date the benefits were terminated and then forward to Green Shield/JCC no other instructions were given. Unfortunetly it took well over 6 weeks to obtain this letter from Green Shield/USSteel and when i forwarded it to Green Shield/JCC they informed me that because 30 day has passed from the date of loss i am now a late applicant and i must fill out the late applicant form, which i do and am informed that I am granted the coverage however after reviewing the late applicant form my daughter and son are not going to be granted the coverage. What have they based this decision on the fact that her medications are expensive how dare they have that power to deny my daughter and son coverage just because it has taken over 3o days to obtain the letter from GREEN SHILED AT USSTEEL to give to GREENSHIELD AT JCC!! I cant begin to describe the feelings this decision has left me with, particularily considering I am a front line health care provider! I am interested in understanding exactly how the drug/benefit coverage fits into the Canada Health Act, surely to deny someone drug coverage will only come back to have an impact on the health care system. The JCC recently published the sunshine list and shared revealing that the CEO of the JCC makes over 800,000 a year and yet i can not have benefits for my dependents! I hope to get some feedback surrounding this matter it would be helpful. Thank you in advance Denise Goodale RN BScN
